To redact means to remove information from a document before it is shared, so that the people who receive it cannot read or recover it. Courts, governments, employers, universities and hospitals redact names, account numbers, addresses and medical details every day.
In a PDF file, the word matters, because a PDF is built in layers. A box drawn on top of a sentence is one layer and the sentence is another, so the page can look redacted while the words are still in the file.
The short answer. Redacting a PDF means the words are taken out of the file. Covering them with a black box, a black highlighter or a white box marked “REDACTED” only hides them on screen. A real redaction leaves nothing to select, copy or search, and it should be checked afterwards.
Covering versus removing
Covering puts colour over the words. Select across the box, copy and paste into a plain text editor, and the words come back. In September 2026 a United States federal court in New York ordered a lawyer to pay $2,316 after bank details under a white “REDACTED” box were copied out and shared online (Mercante v. Tarzia, order of 18 September 2026).
Removing takes the words out of the file. Some programs delete the words under the box. Redaction Studio rebuilds each page as a picture with the boxes painted in, so there is no text left at all.
Redaction is not the only thing to remove
A PDF file can also carry details that never show on a page: the author’s name, the program that made it, the dates, comments and older saved versions. Redacting the page does not touch those. Remove metadata from a PDF file shows and clears them.
How to do it and check it
The guide How to redact a PDF for free walks through the steps. Whatever tool you use, check the result with Is It Really Blacked Out? before the file goes anywhere.
Questions people ask
What does redacted mean?
Redacted means information has been removed from a document before it was shared, so the reader cannot see or recover it. The removed parts usually show as solid black or white blocks.
Is blacking out the same as redacting?
Only if the words are taken out of the file. A black box or highlighter on top hides the words on screen but leaves them in the file.
Why is redacted text sometimes still readable?
Because the tool covered the words instead of removing them. The text stays in the PDF file underneath the box and can be selected, copied or searched.
