Why do scam texts start with “wrong number”?

A message arrives from a number you do not know: “Hi Sarah, are we still on for dinner?” or “Is this David? We met at the conference.” It looks like an honest mistake, and the polite reply is to say they have the wrong number.

That polite reply is what the sender is waiting for. The Federal Trade Commission, the United States consumer protection agency, describes “wrong number” scams that start as a seemingly misdirected message and often grow into a conversation with romantic undertones that can lead to investment and other scams (Federal Trade Commission, 16 April 2025).

The short answer. A wrong-number opener tests whether a real, friendly person is at the other end. Anyone who replies has shown they will chat with a stranger. The sender then keeps the conversation going, sometimes for weeks, before bringing up investing, cryptocurrency, a job or a request for money. You do not need to reply. Delete the message, block the number and report it.

What usually happens next

  1. The sender apologises, then keeps chatting: where are you from, what do you do, it must be fate that we met.
  2. The friendship moves to another app, such as WhatsApp or Telegram, and photos and daily messages follow.
  3. Money appears in the conversation: a relative who trades, a platform showing large profits, an offer to show you how.
  4. The trading website shows growing gains, so people put in more. When they try to take the money out, there are fees, taxes or excuses, and the money does not come back.

What to do instead of replying

  • Do not reply, even to correct them. Delete the message and block the number.
  • Report it in your messaging app. On an iPhone, Messages can report junk; on Android, Google Messages has Report spam.
  • In the United States, forward the text to 7726 (the letters SPAM) so your mobile provider can block similar messages, and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Other countries are on the official help page.
  • If a new online friend brings up investing, stop there. Paste their message into the scam text message check to see the warning signs.

Fewer of these calls and texts on your phone

On an iPhone, Screen Unknown Callers in Settings, then Apps, then Phone can ask unknown callers why they are calling or send them to voicemail (Apple Support). In Google Messages on Android, spam protection is on by default and moves suspected scam messages to the spam folder (Google Messages Help). The guide Set up a phone against scams has more.

Questions people ask

Should I reply to a wrong number text?

No. You do not need to correct a stranger. Replying confirms that a real person reads messages on your number. Delete it, block the number and report it.

Why do scammers send wrong number texts?

To start a conversation that feels accidental and harmless. Once someone replies, the sender builds a friendship over days or weeks and then introduces an investment, a job or a request for money.

What if I already replied?

Stop replying and block the number. Replying once does not put your money at risk. Never move to another app with the stranger, send money or join an investment platform they suggest.
