Most artificial intelligence assistants can use what you type to improve their models, unless you switch that off. Each company names the setting differently and puts it in a different menu, and the menus change often.
This page gives each setting’s name and where to find it, taken from each company’s own help pages on 17 October 2026. If a menu looks different on your phone, the linked help page has the latest steps.
The short answer. In ChatGPT, turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings, then Data controls. In Claude, turn off Help improve Claude under Settings, then Privacy. In Gemini, turn off Keep Activity under Settings and help, then Activity. In Microsoft Copilot, turn off Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations under Privacy. Switching these off stops future chats being used for training; it does not delete what you already typed.
ChatGPT, by OpenAI
- Stop training on your chats: open your account menu, choose Settings, then Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone. On the phone apps, open the sidebar, tap your profile, then Data controls.
- Temporary Chat: temporary chats do not appear in your history, do not create memories and are not used to improve models. OpenAI says they may be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

Claude, by Anthropic
- Stop training on your chats: open Settings, then Privacy, and turn off Help improve Claude. With it off, new chats are not used for future model training. Anthropic says conversations flagged by its safety systems may still be used for safety work.

Settings help, but what you paste matters more
A setting decides how a company uses your chats. It does not stop what you paste from being stored. Before pasting a document, an email or a message into any assistant, read what not to paste into artificial intelligence, or use Hide Names from AI to swap names and numbers for labels first, on your own device.
