Equal mode divides the check subtotal, tax, and tip across the number of people you enter. Type the pre-tip subtotal, tax as a dollar amount or a percent, a tip percent (presets 10, 15, 18, 20, 25, or custom), and the headcount. Each person owes the same amount except leftover pennies, which go to the first person so the table still matches the check.
In itemized mode, each dish has a name, a price, and one or more people (tap the name chips). A dish with several people selected is split evenly among them. A dish with nobody selected is treated as shared by everyone. Tax and tip are then allocated in proportion to each person's food subtotal, so someone who ordered more pays more of the tax and tip.
In the United States, many diners tip on the pre-tax food and drink subtotal. Some people prefer to tip on subtotal plus tax. This calculator lets you choose. The default is the pre-tax subtotal. House policy and local custom can differ. This is not financial advice.
The tool works in integer cents so the shares add up to the check. After dividing, leftover cents (from 0 up to one less than the number of people) are assigned to the first person. The results panel labels that extra. Optional round-up then raises each person's share to the next whole dollar. The extra dollars are additional tip, not missing pennies.
Yes. Copy share link stores the current inputs in the URL hash (or a query string fallback). There is no server. Send the link by text or a payment app. Anyone who opens it sees the same split. Reset clears the encoded state.
No. It runs entirely in your browser. There is no account and no upload. That is why it is suitable as a save-to-home-screen shortcut at the table. After the page has loaded, you do not need to send the check to a website. A service worker is not included.
Presets are 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25%, plus a custom percent. Typical full-service restaurants in the U.S. often see 18% to 20% on the pre-tax subtotal. Follow posted policy, local custom, and your own judgment. This page does not tell you what to tip.
The layout is mobile-first, with large tap targets and 16px inputs so iOS does not zoom the page. Add it to your home screen for a PWA-style shortcut (theme color and app title are set).
